Location of the University of Toyama and Features of the University of Toyama

Toyama Prefecture, home to the University of Toyama, is situated nearly in the geographical center of Japan. Toyama has extensive interaction with China, Korea, and other countries facing the Sea of Japan, with regular international flights to Dalian, Shanghai, and Seoul. Toyama also offers excellent transportation access within Japan. It is approximately three hours to Tokyo and Osaka by JR train.

The University of Toyama is located nearly in the center of Toyama Prefecture. The University has eight faculties, six graduate schools, one institute, and a university hospital situated on three campuses (Sugitani, Gofuku, and Takaoka Campuses). Approximately 10,000 students and 300 international students are enrolled at the University.

Features of the Sugitani Campus

The Sugitani Campus is the medical campus, housing the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Institute of Natural Medicine, and University Hospital. This is the site of active joint research among the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Institute of Natural Medicine. The campus also houses the Life Science Research Center which is equipped with leading-edge equipments and supports research.

Features of the University of Toyama Graduate School of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences for Education (Pharmaceutical Sciences)

Faculty members at the University of Toyama Graduate School of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences for Education (Pharmaceutical Sciences) are academic advisors from the Graduate School of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences for Research (Pharmaceutical Sciences) and the Institute of Natural Medicine, and are in charge of the pursuit of excellent education and research in their fields. Based on the foundation of basic research in chemistry, physics, and biology, the Graduate School engages in education and research in the “creation of new medicines”, “understanding of new functions of medicines”, “protection of the human body with medicines”, and the “application of modern science to the field of natural medicine”. Also, in education related to clinical pharmacy, the staff of the Department of Hospital Pharmacy, Toyama University Hospital participates in the development of skilled pharmacists. We have accepted 38 international students from China, Korea, and the other Asian countries during the past 5 years.

Toyama and Pharmacy

The pharmaceutical industry has been a representative of industries traditionally associated with Toyama since the Edo Period (early the 17th century). Toyama is known as the“City of Pharmacy,” and Toyama Prefecture is home to more than 100 pharmaceutical companies. Accordingly, Toyama is the ideal location to engage in drug research and to study drug creation. The University of Toyama participates in the Hokuriku Innovation Cluster for Health Science which promotes community-based collaborations. It is meaningful to establish international standards for natural medicine. The University also collaborates with the Toyama Hospital Pharmaceutical Association to focus on the development of skilled pharmacists.
