Education at the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Developing human resources that can contribute to the health, welfare, and hygiene of humankind, as well as foster a healthy social environment through an understanding of medicine

The main mission of pharmacy is to build a bridge connecting medicine and life, which appeals to people with a passion for providing new medicines to those suffering from illness, and who want to alleviate the suffering of those who are sick. In a broad sense, pharmacy is a field that explores the mutual interactions between chemical substances and the human body. The biggest feature of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is that it is structured according to this concept, and the faculty aims to educate human resources who are masters in not only pharmaceuticals but in a wide range of areas relating to food and living environments. It is therefore necessary for students to attain knowledge in basic natural sciences, including physics, chemistry, and biology, after which they will build on that foundation and study specialist pharmacy topics.
The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Toyama encompasses the School of Medicine, the University Hospital, and the Institute of Natural Medicine on the Sugitani Campus. By integrating medicine and pharmaceuticals, integrating tradition and the latest knowledge, and integrating Eastern and Western knowledge, the University fosters Toyama-style medicine specialists who are highly creative individuals leading the way to the future.

Fostering Medicine Specialists in Two Departments

The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at this University includes the four-year course in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (35 places available) and the six-year course in the Department of Pharmacy (70 places available). Up until the third year, students largely take the same lectures and practical training courses, but from the fourth year the students in each department embark on their own specialized curriculum. In the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the primary focus is graduation research, which provides a good link to the more in-depth graduate school education. Meanwhile, in the Department of Pharmacy, in addition to graduation research, students also take lectures and practical training courses in clinical pharmacy, and if a pass mark is obtained in the Pharmaceutical Common Achievement Tests, practical clinical training is undertaken and students can qualify to take Japan’s National Examination for Pharmacists.
