Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Department of Pharmaceutical Technology (4-Year Course)

Producing Specialists to Create Drugs and Researchers for Drug Discovery

The program provides students with essential specialized pharmaceutical knowledge in areas such as pharmacology, pharmaceutical science, and basic natural sciences (chemistry, biology, and physics). Students in our program also learn about medical care and develop their "soft skills."
Through the third year, students focus on studying the fundamentals of drugs and engage in specialized courses. In the fourth year, students―including those in the Institute of Natural Medicine―are assigned to laboratories and conduct experiments and research in small groups. Upon graduation, students receive the degree of Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Over the course of the Master's and Ph.D. programs―two and three years in length, respectively-we provide high-quality instruction in a laboratory setting to develop students into researchers with practical skills and advanced knowledge and techniques. In recent years, more students who are aspiring to work as researchers in corporations and other institutions have chosen to go on to the graduate school.
The Department of Pharmaceutical Technology has a number of strengths and advantages. One is its ability to coordinate with the Faculty of Medicine to enable students to develop a perspective from the front line of healthcare―fieldwork in a clinical setting is an essential aspect of research into drug discovery. Another strength of the department is its ability to link with the Institute of Natural Medicine to enable students to learn about Japanese Kampo medicines, from the basics to the latest developments.
