Extracurricular Activities

The university offers a total of roughly fifty sports and culture clubs. Toyama features both seaside and mountains nearby, and the university features many outdoor clubs. Many students wish to try something new as university students, and these make fun and meaningful ways to spend time after school.

Women’s Rubber Baseball Club

Our women’s soft baseball club is one of only a few such clubs at universities nationwide. The club includes both beginners and experienced players, all of whom love baseball. The club meets three days a week, with occasional joint practice sessions with other universities to hone everyone’s skills.
Our goal as a team is to achieve results at the All-Japan University Women’s Baseball Championship Tournament, held each August in Uozu City — sacred ground for women’s baseball. Some twenty universities from across the country come together here for this tournament, and the people of Uozu offer friendly cheers as each of these teams plays their hardest to earn the title of best in Japan. We train harder as the tournament approaches, competing with one another as a fun way of improving the team as a whole toward achieving this goal.

Mountaineering Club

Our mountaineering club currently has about fifty members. The club is usually active on weekends, and we have members who like to traverse mountains on long weekends or long vacations. Our activities include hiking, river trekking, rock climbing, winter mountain climbing, and other types of mountaineering. There’s plenty for members to enjoy all year round: even just a single mountain offers lots to do, through different seasons and different approaches.
Toyama Prefecture is home to some of Japan’s most famous mountains, including Mt. Tsurugidake and Mt. Tateyama, as well as countless other mountains, each with their own unique character. Toyama is also close to the prefectures of Nagano, Gifu, and Niigata, making this an outstanding region of Japan for enjoying the great outdoors.

Orchestra Club

The university orchestra is a large club consisting of over fifty students from the School of Medicine and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. In addition to students with experience playing musical instruments, the orchestra also has many members who first began playing music after becoming students at the university, and everyone can learn from one another and enjoy the orchestra’s friendly atmosphere. Every June, the orchestra holds a regular concert that serves as a culmination of their efforts, and all of the members practice hard in preparation for that day. Nothing beats the experience of coming together as an orchestra to create music, and these concerts bring the orchestra together as a group.
In addition to practicing music, the orchestra also meets up on days off for grilling parties, or picnics to enjoy the cherry blossoms or the autumn colors, for a nice addition to everyday life.

Shabenkai(Herbal medicine study club)

This student-run club focuses on studying herbal medicine. The “shaben” in the club’s name is named for the red horse whip that belongs to Shennong, the Chinese god of agriculture and medicine. According to ancient Chinese legend, Shennong would use this whip to test the plants he collected, to discover medicines. Though students can also learn about herbal medicine in class, this club offers a place for deeper, broader study of herbal medicine.
The club’s main activities are study sessions held every day from Monday through Friday, with various themes each session, including basic theory, how to use prescription drugs and natural medicines, case studies, and more.
In addition to study sessions, the club also holds fun events throughout the year, helping students balance learning and private life.

Medicine and Pharmacy Festival

Held in October, during university festival month, this event offers health checks and displays related to medicine and pharmacy, as well as stage performances, food stalls, and three-campus events. This event is a great time for students, teachers, alumni, and other people who live in the nearby community to have fun and get to know each other.
