The Tree of Symbol for the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

楓フウ

Background of the birth of the symbol tree “Fu”

The “Fu” tree currently planted in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences’ Experimental Station for Medicinal Plant Research has a history dating back to the prewar era of Toyama Vocational School for Pharmacy, which was located on the grounds of Okuda, Toyama City at that time, through the former Toyama University era, to the present.

In 1945, Toyama Vocational School for Pharmacy was destroyed by fire in an air raid, but the Fu tree miraculously survived. We have decided to plant a clone of the Fu tree that survived the war and has been a part of the history of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences as the "symbol tree of this Faculty" in front of the entrance to the research building of Faculty.

The Fu tree has the strength and luck to survive against the odds, having withstood and survived the fires of war. We hope that the strong and growing image of Fu tree will further develop education and research at the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The Ideas behind the Symbol Tree

On November 28, 2019, a commemorative tree-planting ceremony was held in the front yard of the main entrance to the research building of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences to plant a Fu tree, the symbolic tree of Faculty. Faculty members, students, and staff of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, as well as the staff of the Experimental Station for Medicinal Plant Research, piled the soil wishing for the Fu tree to grow.
The Fu tree now watches over the future of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, along with the gatepost of Toyama College of Pharmacy, the predecessor of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
