Slogan and Catchphrases of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

The slogan of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, “Caring for Patients as Professionals of KUSURI” first saw the light of day on December 19, 2018, to represent our resolution and the spirit of the Faculty, and the calligraphy was unveiled on February 20, 2019. The slogan was proposed by Hideki Sakai, Dean of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the calligraphy was written by Seison Hayashi, a calligrapher living in Toyama Prefecture.
The framed original of this calligraphy has been hung on the front wall of the entrance lobby of the Faculty’s research building.

Background of the Slogan

The “崇き連峰” represents Toyama’s Tateyama Mountain Range, with peaks rising 3,000 m above sea level. “薬師” means Mt. Yakushi, located on the south side of the Tateyama Range.

During the climbing season, a statue of Yakushi Nyorai (Bhaisajyaguru, the Buddha of healing and medicine) is placed at the summit of Mt. Yakushi. We can enjoy a magnificent view of Mt. Yakushi from our research building at Sugitani Campus.

The Ideas behind the Slogan

The “崇き連峰” imply the hard and important issues in pharmaceutical-related fields that the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. We should take on and solve, making full use of our expertise and technologies. The “薬師への挑戦” reminds us that we, at the University of Toyama School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, against a backdrop of Mt. Yakushi, shall challenge ourselves to the best of our abilities, with the aim of becoming pharmaceutical professionals — Yakushi, or literally, “medicine masters.”

This catchphrase expresses the eagerness of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences toward the present moment. It is used on keychain accessories featuring the official mascot characters and student characters of the Faculty. This catchphrase also appears on the website’s home page.

Creating Medicine with Thoughtful Care

This catchphrase expresses the determination of our school, and in the original Japanese, it incorporates the names of the official student characters, Ai (“Love”) and Sou (“Creation”) Yakushi. It is used on the website’s home page.

This catchphrase expresses our hope that junior high and high school students will want to study at the University of Toyama in the future. It is used on keychain accessories featuring the official mascot characters and student characters of the Faculty.
