Aiming to become a “Yakushi” from Toyama, the KUSURI city

Dean of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Toyama Prefecture is located near the center of the Japanese archipelago, which stretches long from north to south. With the Hokuriku Shinkansen bullet train, airports, and expressways in place, the Toyama Prefecture is well situated for access to both Tokyo and Osaka regions. Toyama is also blessed with abundant nature, with varied topography from the 3,000-meter-high Tateyama Mountains to Toyama Bay, which is over 1,000 meters deep. In Toyama, the tradition and history of medicines have been engraved for more than 300 years. The name "Kusuri no Toyama" (meaning "medicine in Toyama" in Japanese) has become a national brand due to the history of the pharmaceutical sales and placement business, as well as the concentration of various pharmaceutical-related companies and other pharmaceutical businesses in the area.

School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Toyama, is the only national university in Toyama Prefecture, and has been cultivating and producing highly skilled human resources who can be active on the front lines of pharmacy-related fields as leaders in society. Department of Pharmacy (6-year course) educates pioneering pharmacists who can respond to advanced medical care, and Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (four-year course) educates advanced drug discovery researchers who can be involved in the development of new drugs and drug formulations. Both of departments emphasize the development of human resources with a strong awareness of clinical practice and "close cooperation between medicine and pharmaceuticals".

The Sugitani Campus, where the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is located, is a medical campus with a concentration of pharmaceutical-related faculties, departments, and facilities, including the School of Medicine (Medicine and Nursing), the University Hospital, and the Institute of Natural Medicine, making it an ideal location for cooperation among medicine, nursing, and pharmacy in providing medical personnel training education. Taking advantage of this location, joint lectures and training programs are held, fostering a mindset of medical professionals with an awareness of cooperation among other professions. In addition, the Experimental Station for Medicinal Plant Research, which has 2,000 species of medicinal plants, the Museum of Pharmaceutical Science, and the Museum of Materia Medica are located on campus to promote education and research related to Eastern and Western medicine, including natural medicine, which is a characteristic of this campus.

The Tateyama Mountains and Mt. Yakushi, which are mentioned in the slogan of School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, "Caring for Patients as Professionals of KUSURI" can be seen from the Sugitani Campus. The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences looks forward to welcoming those who strive to become "pharmaceutical professionals (Yakushi)" while enjoying such a magnificent view.
