Official Characters of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

The University of Toyama School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences created its mascot characters Naorun & Kusurita in 2014, and its student characters Ai & Sou Yakushi in 2018, in the hopes that young people and the general public would be interested in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, as well as Toyama as a center of medicines, and to cultivate interest in work related to Toyama’s medicine in the future, revitalizing Toyama Prefecture. These characters are used in various ways for Faculty publicity, such as for open campus events.

Student Characters (created in July 2018)

On July 2, 2018, we debuted our student characters, created based on our image of students of the University of Toyama School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences: Ai Yakushi, and her younger brother Sou.
Their family name, Yakushi, comes from Mt. Yakushi of the Tateyama Mountain Range, a symbol of Toyama Prefecture. We named the older sister Ai, which means “love” in Japanese, and the younger brother Sou, which means “creation,” representing our desire to work with medicines and patients with thoughtful care, and to create new medicines. The original concept was created by Professor Hideki Sakai, and the characters were developed by Hitomi Matsuoka, a designer living in Toyama Prefecture.
